Ergonomic Typing
For computer users who type all day, ergonomic typing is a must. There is a right way, and a wrong way, to type. Following proper procedure can increase productivity and decrease the likelihood of typing injuries. While it may seem unlikely that a computer keyboard can cause injury, it happens all the time. Repetitive stress injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome are just two common problems being experienced by computer users. These problems can be very painful and in some cases debilitating.
Luckily there are measures you can take to prevent these types of injuries. First, you need to understand what causes them. Typing a great deal on a daily basis can be one reason stress on the hands and wrists is experienced. However there are ways to type as much as you need to while avoiding injuries, after all prolific best selling authors do it all the time. Checking and rechecking the position of your hands and wrists while working is one thing you need to be doing. It is easy to fall into bad typing habits which can be damaging.
The wrists should be straight while typing and not allowed to rest on the wrist pad. The wrist pad should be used to rest the wrists in between typing sessions and not during. Fingers should be gently curved and hover right above the keys. Using proper finger placement on the home keys as well as proper typing techniques is important as well. If you aren't familiar with these techniques there are online tutor programs as well as traditional typing classes you can take. By learning how to type properly you'll go a lot faster and be more comfortable although learning the right techniques may take awhile if you've always been a hunt and peck typist.
A discussion on ergonomic typing guidelines would not be complete without touching on proper chair posture. The keyboard should be at waist height and the arms should extend comfortably to the keyboard. Feet should be flat on the floor -- if this is impossible consider using a slanted footrest. Keep your back straight, and your monitor at eye level. Make sure to stretch your wrists, hands and fingers prior to work and take frequent breaks as well. You may also want to consider an ergonomic keyboard, which is especially designed to minimize injury and strain from typing.
